Government launches Borj El Amri power plant expansion and fast-tracks other key projects

The meeting focused on three key projects: the expansion of the Borj El Amri electricity production plant, the completion of the Category B regional hospital in Thala, Kasserine governorate, and the Ennahli Digital City in Ariana governorate. A directive was issued to accelerate the completion of all three projects and remove any obstacles delaying them. The Borj El Amri project, presented by the Minister of Equipment and Housing, responsible for the Ministry of Industry, Mines, and Energy, Salah Zouari, involves installing a third gas turbine with a capacity of 250 to 400 megawatts.

This expansion, estimated at 600 million dinars, also includes necessary infrastructure for electricity evacuation and is expected to be operational by summer 2027. This initiative addresses Tunisia's rising electricity consumption, which saw a new peak of 6,400 MW in July 2026, up from 5,175 MW in 2025, leading to power outages during the summer. The government aims to strengthen the energy system through increased production, network development, smart meters, enhanced storage, renewable energy projects, and improved energy efficiency.
