Chief Imam's spokesperson calls for prosecution of cleric over incitement to violence
Sheikh Aremeyaw Shaibu, spokesperson for the National Chief Imam, has called for the prosecution of an Islamic cleric, Sheikh Masud Abdullahi, following a viral video in which Abdullahi made remarks inciting violence. In the video, Sheikh Abdullahi reportedly stated that those who insult Prophet Muhammad should be beheaded, claiming such an act would not be a crime and would lead to paradise. Sheikh Shaibu described the cleric's comments as deeply disturbing and a threat to Ghana's peace and security. He emphasized that Sheikh Abdullahi's subsequent apology was insufficient, as people might already have been incited, and insisted that authorities should question him. Sheikh Shaibu, who also serves on the National Peace Council, stated that the cleric's comments run contrary to the teachings of the Quran. Public reactions on social media have also called for swift action by the Ghana Police Service against inflammatory religious rhetoric.
