Ghana's National Cardiothoracic Centre treats 28 children with heart conditions in Qatar Charity collaboration

This was part of a four-day humanitarian mission by a four-member pediatric cardiac team from Qatar Charity, collaborating with NCTC's pediatric cardiac specialists. The interventions, performed using advanced, minimally invasive cardiac catheterization techniques at the Centre’s newly commissioned bi-plane cardiac catheterization laboratory, marked Qatar Charity's fifth visit to Ghana and their first hosted directly at Korle Bu Teaching Hospital. The visiting team was led by Pediatric Interventional Cardiologist Dr. Iyad Al-Ammouri.

Dr. Kow Entsua-Mensah, Director of the NCTC, stated that the mission aimed to treat patients and strengthen local expertise. The NCTC clinical team, led by Pediatric Cardiologists Prof. Nana-Akyaa Yao and Dr. Della Adzosii, worked alongside the visiting doctors to treat patients ranging from five-month-old infants to a 23-year-old medical student. The procedures addressed abnormal cardiac connections, hole-in-heart conditions, and performed balloon dilations for narrowed valves and blood vessels.

Dr. Al-Ammouri expressed optimism for future annual missions, and Prof. Yao described the procedures as a historic milestone, commending Qatar Charity for providing all treatments at no cost.
