Ghanaian scholarship students at University of Memphis face uncertainty over $4 million tuition debt

The students, beneficiaries of the Ghana Scholarships Secretariat’s program, cannot register for the upcoming fall semester without alternative funding. The University of Memphis confirmed that Ghana's tuition obligations have reached almost $4 million, increasing from $3.6 million in July 2025 despite two $1 million payments in August 2025. University President Bill Hardgrave previously linked payment delays to Ghana's change in government and its impact on the national budget.

The university has warned of potential academic dismissal, immigration complications, and loss of accommodation for the affected students, who are enrolled in programs such as science, engineering, and business. The Ghana Scholarships Secretariat attributes the payment challenges to an ongoing audit and administrative processes. The students' immigration status could be affected if they cannot maintain full-time enrollment.

The University of Memphis is exploring options with the students to help them complete their studies, while the students hope for alternative funding or government intervention to resolve the debt.
