
NPP protests in Accra over 'Democracy Under Attack
Members of the New Patriotic Party NPP took to the streets of Accra on Thursday, August 6, 2026, for a demonstration titled โDemocracy Under Attack.โ The protest aims to defend civil liberties, the rule of law, and democratic accountability, according to the party. Marching from the Supreme Court to the Jubilee House, protesters are expressing concerns about alleged threats to Ghanaโs democratic values. The Alliance for Accountable Governance AFAG has also supported the demonstration, urging peaceful participation to protect democratic principles, constitutional rights, and the independence of state institutions. AFAG stated that the protest transcends partisan politics, focusing on safeguarding Ghanaโs democracy and strengthening public institutions. Organizers are using hashtags such as DemocracyUnderAttack, SaveGhanaNow, and SayNoToStateCapture to mobilize support. The NPP highlights issues including alleged restrictions on freedom of expression, concerns about the treatment of opposition voices, and perceived threats to democratic institutions.
