IGP Yohuno calls on Christian and Muslim leaders to actively protect Ghana's peace
Inspector-General of Police IGP Christian Tetteh Yohuno has urged Christian and Muslim leaders in Ghana to move beyond preaching tolerance and actively work to protect the nation's peace. Speaking at the National Police Headquarters on Friday, August 14, 2026, Yohuno emphasized the powerful influence religious leaders have over young people and their ability to prevent religious disagreements from escalating into violence. He asked leaders to commit to three key actions: dedicating their regular services to messages of interfaith harmony and discouraging conflict, reminding their congregations that threats to Ghana's peace impact future generations, and visibly demonstrating unity in communities. Yohuno encouraged joint attendance at events, shared meals, and issuing joint statements to show that faith differences do not create divisions. He believes such public displays of unity would strongly impact young people. The IGP also called on religious leaders to discourage followers from taking the law into their own hands, advocating for disputes to be reported to state institutions rather than resorting to mob action, online abuse, or physical attacks. He cautioned against assuming Ghana's peace will automatically endure, citing conflicts in other West African nations that escalated from minor disputes. Yohuno concluded by urging the religious community to use its influence to prevent hostility and restore public confidence in the country's institutions.
