
Akosombo Dam spillage victims to receive compensation by end of 2026, says Volta Regional Minister
Volta Regional Minister, James Gunu, announced that compensation payments for victims of the 2023 Akosombo Dam spillage will commence before the end of 2026. President John Dramani Mahama has directed the Minister of Finance to release funds for this purpose. The announcement was made after the 3rd Volta Regional Coordinating Council meeting. Gunu also detailed efforts to address power challenges in the Volta Region, including plans for new substations by Ghana Grid Company Limited GRIDCo at Adaklu and Ada, and an electricity connectivity initiative for 306 communities. In terms of industrial development, a strategic investor has been secured for Volta Textiles Limited, with cotton to be sourced from Benin. Progress is also being made on the Volta Economic Corridor and the regional cultural centre. The region has seen over 600 projects by Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies and 371 projects in senior high schools. Water and sanitation efforts include drilling 184 boreholes, with 62 already completed. Road projects are underway to improve connectivity, and sea defence projects are approximately 40% complete. Preparations for the Aflao Market construction are advanced, with feasibility studies and design works completed, and a US$30 million grant secured from the Chinese government.
