
Kwabena Donkor, Amadu Sorogho, and KT Hammond named in Turkey trip amid AKSA deal scrutiny
The Herald has identified Members of Parliament who served on the Select Committee on Mines and Energy when the emergency power agreement between the Government of Ghana and Turkish energy company AKSA Enerji 脺retim A艦 was approved in 2015. This disclosure follows the conviction of former Tema Oil Refinery Managing Director Asante Kwaku Berko in the United States for a bribery scheme involving over US$1 million allegedly paid to Ghanaian officials. The parliamentary committee was chaired by then Madina MP Alhaji Amadu Bukari Sorogho, with Adam Mutawakilu as Vice-Chairman and former Adansi Asokwa MP Kwabena Tahir Hammond as the New Patriotic Party鈥檚 Ranking Member. A technical inspection trip to Turkey was organized during the AKSA project's consideration, with Alhaji Sorogho and Hammond among those who traveled to inspect equipment. Dr. Kwabena Donkor, then Minister of Power and MP for Pru East, was also part of this trip. Dr. Donkor has denied any involvement in the alleged bribery, stating he neither knew of nor received any money. Alhaji Amadu Bukari Sorogho has also denied receiving any bribe from Berko. KT Hammond has publicly defended Dr. Donkor, issuing a statement on his behalf denying knowledge of the alleged bribery scheme. Berko was convicted on August 6, 2026, for conspiring to pay and paying over US$1 million in bribes to Ghanaian officials between 2014 and 2015, linked to the development and financing of a power plant in Ghana involving AKSA and Goldman Sachs.
