Kwesi Pratt Jnr calls for security agencies to dismantle political vigilante groups
Kwesi Pratt Jnr, Managing Editor of the Insight Newspaper, has urged Ghana's security agencies to take decisive action against political vigilante groups. In a post on X on August 27, 2026, Pratt stated that the establishment and operation of these groups violate the 1992 Constitution. He argued that security services have a constitutional duty to "smash" such groups. Pratt cited three constitutional provisions to support his view: Article 85, which prohibits the establishment of national security agencies without constitutional authority; Article 2002, which states that no police service can be raised without an Act of Parliament; and Article 2102, which similarly restricts the raising of armed forces. He emphasized that these provisions are clear and must be enforced. Pratt has consistently spoken against political vigilantism, highlighting its activities as an abuse of power and expressing concern over their continued existence despite efforts to disband them. His recent call refocuses attention on the role of Ghana's security agencies in preventing the formation and activities of politically affiliated groups operating outside the country's recognized security structures.
