Ghana highlights disability inclusion efforts at UN COSP19 conference

The delegation, led by the Minister for Gender, Children and Social Protection, Dr Agnes Naa Momo Lartey, included representatives from various ministries and disability organizations. The conference theme was "CRPD at 20: Celebrating and Consolidating Achievements and Shaping the Next Phase of Implementation in a Changing World." Dr Lartey delivered Ghana's statement, highlighting initiatives such as the Persons with Disabilities Bill, 2026, an increase in the District Assemblies Common Fund allocation for persons with disabilities, and expanded social protection programs like LEAP.

Other efforts include the Free Tertiary Education Policy, integration of the Ghana Accessibility Standard into building regulations, and the Digital Acceleration Project. Cabinet has also approved the ratification of the Protocol to the African Charter on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities. While acknowledging progress, Dr Lartey noted ongoing challenges in employment, attitudinal barriers, and access to assistive technologies.

The Ghanaian delegation also engaged in several side events, sharing experiences on inclusive participation, preparedness for persons with disabilities in emergencies, the private sector's role in inclusive care, and financing disability inclusion. The
