GES policies blamed for rising indiscipline in schools

Speaking on Good Morning Ghana on June 25, 2026, Boakye argued that policies prohibiting corporal punishment, preventing students from repeating classes, and making it difficult to dismiss truant students have undermined teachers' authority. He claimed that some students attend classes minimally, returning only for registration and exams, while teachers are left powerless to enforce discipline. Boakye cited instances of students smoking cannabis and a video allegedly showing a teenage girl demonstrating a sex toy as examples of the growing indiscipline.

He stated that teachers now only refer disciplinary cases to school management or committees, lacking direct intervention rights. While acknowledging that corporal punishment did not eliminate misconduct, he suggested that students from the previous disciplinary system were generally better behaved. Boakye also noted the relaxation of school regulations, allowing students to leave premises during breaks and sometimes not return.

To address this, he advised parents to identify a trusted teacher to mentor and monitor their children, fostering stronger collaboration between parents and teachers to improve student discipline.
