KNUST secures grant for AI education and research under Africa AI Upscale Programme
The Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology KNUST in Kumasi has received a US$45,864 grant through the Africa AI Upscale Programme. This funding aims to enhance artificial intelligence AI education, research, and innovation at the university. KNUST is one of several higher education institutions in Ghana, Nigeria, Kenya, and South Africa participating in this continental initiative, which seeks to establish a sustainable and scalable ecosystem for advanced AI education across Africa. The FATE Foundation and the African Institute of Mathematical Sciences AIMS are implementing the program with support from Google.org. Participating universities will gain access to the Google DeepMind AI Research Foundations Curriculum, along with technical, academic, and institutional support. Professor Eric Appau Asante, Project Lead for KNUST, will coordinate the university's involvement, working with management, academic units, AI champions, teaching assistants, and partners to ensure the project's implementation and long-term sustainability. The initiative aligns with KNUST’s strategic focus on innovation, digital transformation, and globally relevant education, with the university committing to providing necessary facilities and academic support.
