Seif Eddine Makhlouf referred to criminal court for forgery and illegal border crossing
Lawyer and former MP Seif Eddine Makhlouf has been referred to the criminal chamber of the Tunis Court of First Instance to face charges of forgery and illegal border crossing. The summer indictment chamber of the Tunis Court of Appeal made the decision on Thursday, August 20, 2026. The case concerns the circumstances under which Makhlouf allegedly left national territory illegally, with investigations focusing on suspicions of forgery and the use of unauthentic documents to facilitate his departure. The criminal chamber will now set a date for the trial. This new development adds to several other legal cases against the former MP. Makhlouf was arrested in June 2024 at Annaba airport in Algeria while attempting to travel to Istanbul and then Doha. He was extradited to Tunisia and detained on January 18, 2026. On March 12, the sixth correctional chamber of the Tunis Court of First Instance sentenced him to four years in prison for charges including divulging national defense secrets and undermining state security. More recently, on May 20, 2026, the correctional chamber of the Tunis Court of Appeal upheld his conviction of one year and ten months in prison for the assault of Abir Moussi, president of the Free Destourian Party, an incident that occurred on June 30, 2021, at the Assembly of People's Representatives. Makhlouf, a candidate in the 2019 presidential election, was elected to the Assembly under the Al Karama coalition.
