Maersk strengthens Morocco logistics with new Tangier-Casablanca rail link
Maersk has enhanced its logistics network in Morocco by establishing a regular rail link between Tangier and Casablanca. This initiative addresses increasing cargo volumes and congestion in Casablanca, aiming to position Tangier as the primary maritime entry point for Maersk's operations in the country. Goods will arrive in Tangier and then be transported by rail to Casablanca, Morocco's main industrial and commercial hub. This strategy, which became fully operational on August 14, seeks to provide more predictable transit times and reduce reliance on a single mode of transport. Casablanca's port handled 17 million tons of freight in the first half of 2026, with 3.53 million tons in June alone, representing about 35% of national port traffic. This growth has led to operational constraints and congestion. By utilizing Tangier's strong international maritime connectivity and the rail link, Maersk aims to create an integrated supply chain that includes customs clearance, inland storage, and final delivery by truck. Ruben Moratinos, Head of Sales Maghreb at Maersk, stated that this connection creates a simpler way to move goods to Morocco's main commercial center, offering access to more international trade flows and supply chain diversification for businesses. This development also highlights a broader goal for Morocco's logistics competitiveness: better connecting major port infrastructures with production and consumption areas, with rail offering an alternative to road transpo
