Four South Africans among hundreds missing after deadly Nepal floods

The floods, caused by a glacial collapse, swept away entire villages, destroyed infrastructure, and cut off trekking routes near Syabrubesi. Over 400 tourists from various countries, including Australia, Britain, India, Malaysia, Portugal, South Korea, and the United States, remain unaccounted for. Dr. Imtiaz Sooliman, founder of Gift of the Givers, confirmed his team was contacted by the daughter of a missing South African couple and learned of another missing South African couple.

He described the extensive damage, noting that helicopter surveillance is the only access due to destroyed roads, and there's a risk of a dam collapse. Gift of the Givers has rescue specialists and dog handlers on standby, in communication with Nepalese authorities, and awaits a formal request for international assistance. Chinese President Xi Jinping emphasized the urgent need for search and rescue efforts, with China deploying nearly 800 emergency workers in Tibet.

Scientists have warned of a potential second flood due to upstream river blockages. The floods have impacted seven districts, disrupting tourism and pilgrimage routes.
