Ghana Armed Forces begin work on Accra-Kumasi Expressway, government seeks traditional support
The Government of Ghana, through the Ghana Armed Forces, has started clearing the right of way for the 198-kilometer Accra-Kumasi Expressway, a key infrastructure project under the NDC Government led by President John Dramani Mahama. This project, spanning the Ablekuma-Oda-Sewia corridor, aims to reduce travel time between the capital and the Ashanti Region and open new economic corridors. A government delegation, including the Minister for Roads and Highways, Kwame Governs Agbodza, and the Deputy Minister of Defence, Ernest Brogya Yaw Genfi, visited the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, at the Manhyia Palace to seek traditional support. Deputy Defence Minister Genfi stated that the clearing began in March 2025 and is expected to finish within 20 weeks, emphasizing the project's role in strengthening connectivity, boosting trade, and advancing national development. The Asantehene assured his full support, urging the team to focus on delivery despite potential public criticism. The Accra-Kumasi corridor is vital for trade and transportation, and the new expressway is anticipated to cut travel time, reduce vehicle operating costs, improve safety, and foster commercial and industrial development. Work is projected to be completed within three years, aiming for 2028β2029.
