Ghana and Russia sign visa waiver agreement for diplomatic and service passport holders
Ghana and Russia have signed a Visa Waiver Agreement for holders of diplomatic and service passports. The agreement was signed by Ghana's Minister of Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, during his three-day official visit to Russia at the invitation of Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov. Ablakwa announced the development on August 17, 2026, stating it is the first such agreement since formal bilateral relations were established in 1958. Both countries plan to continue negotiations for enhanced visa privileges for other categories of travelers to deepen trade, investment, and people-to-people exchanges. During discussions, Ablakwa also thanked Russia for supporting a Ghana-led United Nations resolution declaring transatlantic enslavement and racialized chattel as a grave crime against humanity. The visit aims to identify broader areas of strategic cooperation and strengthen diplomatic relations.
