Amadou Ba criticizes Constitutional Council's power over legislative process
Deputy Amadou Ba of the Pastef parliamentary group has reacted to a decision by the Constitutional Council, which declared a bill on the legal regime of special credits inadmissible. Ba stated that the Constitutional Council, which was seized on August 18, 2026, by Prime Minister Al Amine Lo, has assumed the power to censor bills before their adoption. He argued that this gives the Council "power of life and death" over the legislative process, effectively making it the "master of the legislative procedure" and enabling it to prevent any bill from reaching a plenary session. Ba believes this action strips the legislative power of its substance and reduces the National Assembly to a negative role. He described this as a dangerous path towards a government of judges that undermines the sovereign power of the people and their representatives to legislate. Ba affirmed that the National Assembly will continue its role and that the next presidential election should help escape the "deadly trap of absolute presidentialism" on democracy and the rule of law.
