
Weak sentiment leads to N544bn loss in Nigerian equity market value
Trading on the Nigerian Exchange Limited concluded on Tuesday with a bearish performance, as key market indicators continued their downward trend. The equity market capitalization decreased to N155.97tn from N156.52tn recorded on Monday, reflecting a loss of N544bn. The All-Share Index dropped by 843.42 points, closing at 241,611.23, down from 242,454.65, due to sustained selling pressure across various sectors. The NGX Main-Board Index, NGX 30 Index, NGX Premium Index, NGX Banking Index, NGX Consumer Goods Index, NGX Oil/Gas Index, and NGX Growth Index all experienced declines. The NGX Insurance Index, however, saw a slight increase. Investors executed 35,625 trades involving 429.81m shares. Top gainers included Haldane McCall Plc, Veritas Kapital Assurance Plc, and Tantalizers Plc, while Red Star Express Plc, Trans-Nationwide Express Plc, and Meyer Plc led the losers. Banking stocks like Fidelity Bank Plc and First Holdco Plc also faced downward momentum. In other markets, the ETP segment saw the Vetiva Consumer Goods ETF gain, while the Stanbic IBTC ETF 30 and The SIAMPL Pension ETF both declined. The debt securities market recorded transactions in sovereign non-interest finance board instruments.
