Swapo youth leader denied bail in Sanlam fraud case
Swapo Party Youth League leader Paulus Nuuyoma was denied bail in the Ondangwa Magistrate's Court on Friday. He faces charges related to an alleged insurance fraud scheme exceeding N$1.2 million. Nuuyoma is accused of facilitating a fraudulent N$1.2 million insurance payout linked to Klaudia Martin and a N$69,000 payment allegedly claimed by Abner Mateus. Mateus is also accused of orchestrating an attack on the late Ondangwa prosecutor, Justine Shiweda, last October. The state claims medical personnel at Onandjokwe Intermediate Hospital replaced Elizabeth Elifas's laboratory results from the Namibia Institute of Pathology with Martin's to support the fraudulent insurance claim. Nuuyoma, who ran for Swapo regional treasurer in 2024, appeared with Abner Samuel, Mateus's brother. Samuel, also denied bail, faces a separate charge of defrauding Sanlam of N$253,000.
