Federal Government unveils agricultural mechanisation policy, targets 4,000 locally assembled tractors annually

Senator Abubakar Kyari, the Minister of Agriculture and Food Security, announced this at a high-level dialogue in Abuja, stating that these policies are designed to transform Nigeria into an agricultural powerhouse, achieve mechanisation leadership, and ensure food sovereignty. The minister emphasized that mechanisation encompasses various aspects beyond just tractors, including land preparation, irrigation, processing, and digital technologies. He highlighted the government's move towards a "Mechanization-as-a-Service" economy, ensuring technology reaches farmers affordably.

Under the Renewed Hope National Agricultural Mechanisation Programme, the government has begun procuring and deploying 2,000 tractors and over 9,000 implements. Kyari noted that the proposed assembly plant would reduce reliance on imported machinery, create jobs, and foster a sustainable mechanisation economy. He urged investors, youth, and women to engage in this emerging sector, stating that agriculture is now a domain of enterprise and wealth creation.
