Federal government launches Kwara agroforestry campaign to expand tree planting

This follows the completion of the first phase, which saw approximately 5,000 economic trees planted across four locations. The campaign, part of NALDA’s Green Hope Project, began in Ogun State and extended to the Federal Capital Territory and Plateau State before its first phase concluded in Oke-Onigbin, Kwara State. Salman Ibrahim, Special Assistant on Projects to the NALDA Executive Secretary, announced approval for planting an additional 56,000 economic trees across 34 Open-Field Horticulture Clusters nationwide.

The initial phase engaged around 400 youths as volunteers. The next phase aims to involve over 2,000 young people. NALDA currently manages about 38 Open-Field Horticulture Clusters, covering more than 500 hectares.

The economic trees, including mango, avocado, coconut, and fig, will serve as living perimeter fences, provide food, restore the environment, and create income opportunities for farmers. NALDA is also exploring partnerships for carbon-credit opportunities. Youth participants, known as Green Hope Ambassadors, are expected to advocate for environmental responsibility.
