Ethiopia's Green Legacy Initiative: High ambition, ecological realities, and the legacy of mass tree planting

In a single day, over 26 million citizens planted 805.3 million seedlings across 291,000 hectares. The initiative has seen tens of billions of saplings planted nationwide, with a goal of reaching 65 billion. This year's target is 8 billion seedlings, with 6.5 billion already planted, bringing the projected cumulative total to 56 billion.

The program has increased forest cover from 17.2 percent in 2019 to 23.6 percent, with a national target of 30 percent by 2030. Beyond environmental restoration, it supports sustainable agriculture, watershed rehabilitation, employment creation, and community resilience to climate change. Historically, Ethiopia's forest cover declined from 35-40 percent at the turn of the 20th century to under 4 percent by the early 2000s due to population growth, farming expansion, fuelwood harvesting, and unsustainable grazing.

This led to topsoil erosion, watershed degradation, flash flooding, water scarcity, and siltation in hydroelectric reservoirs. The initiative mobilizes communities, propagates native and agroforestry species, and integrates geospatial mapping.
