NPP MP seeks full disclosure on cost of evacuating Ghanaians from South Africa
Nana Asafo-Adjei Ayeh, the Member of Parliament for Bosome-Freho and Deputy Ranking Member of Parliament鈥檚 Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration Committee, has filed a Right to Information RTI request with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. He is seeking a detailed breakdown of the funds used to evacuate over 1,600 Ghanaians from South Africa since May 2026. This request follows the Ministry's statement that the evacuation was fully funded by the government and "Ghanaian partners." Nana Asafo-Adjei Ayeh is asking for the total amount spent in both Ghana cedis and US dollars, a breakdown by cost category including flights, ground transportation, accommodation, travel documents, reintegration support, and relief items. He also requested supporting expenditure records such as invoices, payment vouchers, receipts, contracts, and payment approvals. Additionally, the MP wants the Ministry to identify the "Ghanaian partners" and their contributions, disclose the source of funds Consolidated Fund, Contingency Fund, approved 2026 budget, or other sources, and provide details for each evacuation flight, including the airline, number of evacuees, cost, and procurement method. The government initiated evacuations in May due to xenophobic attacks, with the first phase bringing home 926 Ghanaians via chartered flights, followed by a second phase using commercial flights in July. A reintegration package for returnees includes a GH垄5,000 grant, GH垄500 transport allowance, and relief items.
