Namibian ICT minister calls for accountability after MPs walk out of National Assembly
Information and communication technology minister Emma Theofelus has urged that members of parliament MPs who left the National Assembly on Tuesday be held accountable. Theofelus stated that such actions undermine parliamentary work. Her comments were made during a debate regarding the nomination of Gerson Sindano as chairperson of the Electoral Commission of Namibia, where a vote was delayed due to a lack of quorum. Opposition MPs exited during the voting, leaving only the All People鈥檚 Party and United Democratic Front in the chamber. Theofelus questioned if MPs who abandon proceedings should be allowed to return without consequence, arguing that such conduct wastes the assembly鈥檚 time and sends a negative message to the public. She asked speaker Saara Kuugongelwa-Amadhila about mechanisms for accountability for walkouts, while praising those who stayed. Kuugongelwa-Amadhila acknowledged the concern and suggested discussing the matter through appropriate parliamentary channels for a resolution.
