Energy Minister Patrick Assirvaden advocates for Mauritian Kreol in Parliament to enhance democratic access

Speaking during debates on establishing a Select Committee to study this reform, Assirvaden emphasized that this initiative marks a historic step that could transform parliamentary operations. He believes it would enable citizens to better understand parliamentary debates, asserting that Kreol would democratize access to Parliament. Assirvaden highlighted that Parliament, as Mauritius' supreme democratic institution, must be accessible to all citizens, regardless of their proficiency in English or French.

He noted that Kreol is the daily language for the majority of Mauritians, integral to national identity and cultural heritage. The minister reassured that introducing Kreol would not abandon English or French, confirming English remains the official language for parliamentary work per the Constitution, while French is already permissible. The Select Committee's mission will include developing a parliamentary vocabulary in Mauritian Kreol to accurately translate legal, legislative, and procedural concepts.

Assirvaden also suggested this reform could foster more inclusive political representation, allowing future elected officials to express themselves more naturally and authentically.
