Egypt launches mass mobile SIM data verification, targeting 19 million lines in first phase

This involves sending text messages to customers, informing them that their lines have been suspended due to incomplete registration data and requiring them to visit a company branch to update their details and restore service. The initial phase of this campaign affects approximately 19 million SIM cards. This verification drive aims to ensure that the registered owner of each mobile line matches the actual user, addressing a significant regulatory concern.

The National Telecommunications Regulatory Authority NTRA has referred all four operators to the Public Prosecution over complaints of SIM cards being registered without individuals' knowledge or consent, a practice linked to fraud. In response, the NTRA has implemented new regulatory measures, including requiring holders of older lines to visit a branch in person to sign new contracts confirming their identity. Operators are also mandated to take action against unverified or incomplete lines.

Customers receiving suspension notices must present valid identification at their operator's branch to reactivate their service. The campaign is expected to continue in stages, eventually covering all of Egypt's approximately 127 million mobile lines.
