Egypt implements mining reforms to boost exploration and attract investment

Speaking at the Africa Down Under mining and energy conference in Perth, Australia, Badawi detailed legislative and institutional changes implemented over the past two years. Key measures include an open-block system for year-round investment opportunities, a new royalty-and-tax-based exploitation model, an expanded role for the Egyptian Mineral Resources and Mining Industries Authority, and a one-stop-shop system for approvals and licensing. These reforms follow consultations with mining companies since late 2024.

Incentives for gold exploration companies, particularly junior and mid-sized firms, have also been introduced, such as allowing multi-mineral searches within the same area and reducing exploration-area rental fees. The Egyptian Mineral Resources and Mining Industries Authority is being developed into an economically active entity, with expanded airborne surveys and geological missions providing updated data. Egypt is also developing a digital mining platform to provide investors with access to geological information, streamline license applications, and track progress electronically.
