
Egypt and China collaborate on drought and salinity-resistant crop varieties
Egypt and China are expanding their agricultural research cooperation to develop strategic crop varieties that can withstand harsh environmental conditions. This partnership aims to enhance food security and address climate change and water scarcity. The Egyptian Agricultural Research Center is working with Chinese institutes, including the Northeast China Institute of Agricultural Geography and Ecology, to create hybrid rice, soybean, and corn varieties with increased tolerance to drought and salinity. This initiative is part of a larger effort to integrate modern technology into agriculture and align scientific research with production needs. The cooperation also involves developing high-yield crops resilient to environmental stresses, integrating smart technologies in land reclamation, and creating agricultural forecasting programs. Future plans include using information technology to monitor humidity and temperature and manage irrigation for efficient water use. Research collaboration also covers soil, water, and remote sensing for agricultural land management. This partnership seeks to boost expertise exchange between Egyptian and Chinese researchers and leverage their scientific capabilities to develop production systems more resilient to changing conditions. Developing drought- and salinity-resistant crops is a key focus, alongside smart agriculture, water conservation, food safety, and localizing production inputs, all contributing to sustainable food security.
