Egypt and FAO discuss climate action, adaptation, and mitigation cooperation
Engineer Sherif Abdel Rahim, CEO of the Environmental Affairs Agency, met with Dr. Abdel Hakim El Waer, Assistant Director-General and FAO Representative for the Near East and North Africa Region, to discuss enhancing joint cooperation on climate action, adaptation, mitigation, and resilience-building in Egypt. The meeting focused on supporting Egypt's climate agenda, particularly in circular economy and nature-based solutions, and expanding access to climate finance. Discussions also covered cooperation within integrated multilateral frameworks supported by international climate and environmental funds like the Global Environment Facility and the Green Climate Fund, while strengthening the role of civil society and the private sector. Engineer Sherif Abdel Rahim emphasized the importance of this collaboration in supporting Egypt's National Climate Change Strategy 2050, expanding nature-based solution projects such as protecting coastal ecosystems and northern lakes, and enhancing food security through climate-smart agriculture. The meeting also highlighted strengthening cooperation in waste management, the circular economy, and renewable energy to contribute to Egypt's updated Nationally Determined Contributions and reinforce its regional leadership in addressing climate challenges and protecting biodiversity. The Environmental Affairs Agency's commitment to international cooperation and expertise exchange for sustainable development and ecosystem protection was underscored.
