Former Prime Minister Pravind Jugnauth appeared before the Central Criminal Investigation Department CCID in Mauritius for questioning regarding the Misie Moustas Leaks scandal. The inquiry focuses on the acquisition and use of surveillance and communication interception equipment during his tenure as Prime Minister. Jugnauth requested a postponement of his interrogation to consult with his lawyers, including Senior Counsel Raouf Gulbul and Ivan Collendavelloo, as he did not have the requested information readily available. The CCID granted the request, and a new date will be set. Investigators are seeking to understand the circumstances surrounding the procurement and deployment of the wiretapping equipment and to establish accountability. The investigation began after a series of audio recordings attributed to the Misie Moustas profile were released in October 2024, sparking controversy. Authorities are also examining the origin of the interception systems and their potential connection to the Counter Terrorism Unit CTU. Jugnauth is not the first former government official to be questioned; former Minister of Technology Deepak Balgobin was interviewed in July, and Assistant Commissioner of Police ACP Lilram Deal, former head of the CTU, was also apprehended. Investigators aim to reconstruct the chain of responsibility for the acquisition, management, and use of the interception equipment.
