RIDA Kariba boss in court over Mbuya Nehanda ferry tragedy, bail ruling deferred

Ignatius Chiome, the RIDA Kariba district clerk, appeared in court on August 27, 2026, facing a culpable homicide charge in connection with the Mbuya Nehanda ferry disaster. The incident, which occurred on August 11, resulted in the deaths of 97 people. Prosecutors allege that administrative failures, overloading, and safety breaches contributed to the tragedy. Preliminary findings suggest the ferry may have been carrying up to 180 passengers and heavy cargo, despite being authorized for only 90 passengers. Chiome's bail ruling has been deferred, meaning he will remain in custody over the weekend.
