Ramaphosa opens SADC Summit, calls for accelerated economic integration and turning borders into bridges
President Cyril Ramaphosa opened the 46th Ordinary Summit of the Southern African Development Community SADC Heads of State and Government in Durban, KwaZulu-Natal, urging leaders to accelerate economic integration and deliver the "dividend of economic liberation." He called for the region to transform "borders into bridges" and solidarity into shared prosperity. Ramaphosa welcomed regional leaders to eThekwini, emphasizing the need for renewed urgency in building a peaceful, industrialized, and prosperous Southern Africa. He highlighted SADC's history of resilience, solidarity, and community, forged in the fight against colonialism and apartheid, and stressed the importance of giving economic and social meaning to political liberation. The President noted that the people of the region desire decent jobs, growing industries, reliable electricity, affordable food, quality healthcare, education, and opportunities for young people. Ramaphosa pointed to progress through initiatives like the SADC Free Trade Area, the Real-Time Gross Settlement System, and the Southern African Power Pool, and commended cooperation in health security.
