DR Congo opposition mobilizes protests against President Tshisekedi's third-term bid

The opposition in the Democratic Republic of Congo has called for demonstrations in the capital and other cities to demand President Felix Tshisekedi's resignation, accusing him of attempting to change the constitution to secure a third term. Tshisekedi, whose second and final five-year term under the current constitution ends in late 2028, stated in May that he would accept a third term if the people desired it. The dispute centers on a bill for a referendum on constitutional amendments, passed by Parliament where the presidential bloc holds a majority. Tshisekedi has referred this bill to the Constitutional Court for review. The C64 coalition, formed in May and named after Article 64 of the constitution, which allows citizens to oppose unconstitutional power seizures, includes former presidential candidate Moïse Katumbi, former minister Delly Sesanga, and Martin Fayulu. Sesanga and Fayulu were injured during a June 12 rally in Kinshasa. The United Nations reported at least one protester killed in clashes. The country's Catholic bishops have urged Tshisekedi to uphold his oath to the constitution and called on citizens to oppose any amendment attempts by legal and peaceful means. The government has banned large public gatherings in four provinces, including Kinshasa, due to an Ebola outbreak, and it is unclear if Wednesday's opposition march will be affected.
