Dele Momodu pledges support for President Tinubu if democratic principles are upheld

Momodu expressed his concern about the possibility of replacing military dictatorship with civilian dictatorship. He made these remarks during an interview on Arise TV, emphasizing that his criticism of the President is selective and not personal. Momodu acknowledged that President Tinubu was among those who trained him and instilled the discipline to challenge established authority.

Their relationship spans over three decades, originating from the pro-democracy struggle against military rule in the 1990s. Both Momodu and Tinubu were active in the movement, with Tinubu being a founding member of the National Democratic Coalition and Momodu working for Chief Moshood Abiola's presidential campaign. Both men also went into exile during General Sani Abacha's regime. Despite their shared history, Momodu has become a vocal critic of Tinubu's administration since 2023, particularly regarding its economic and political direction, while still crediting Tinubu for shaping his political consciousness.

Momodu, who ran for president in 2011, is now aligned with the African Democratic Congress and is active in opposition politics ahead of Nigeria's 2027 general election.
