COP32 must innovate human-centered climate solutions, moving beyond past frameworks

The traditional UNFCCC process, spanning over three decades, has struggled to deliver climate action at the necessary pace due to factors like consensus requirements among 198 parties, leading to diluted agreements, and a lack of binding accountability for high-level political pledges. Ethiopia, as host, has a unique opportunity to position Africa as an engine for green innovation, showcasing initiatives like its Green Legacy Initiative for afforestation and its predominantly renewable electricity grid. The summit should shift from focusing solely on sovereign climate aid to hosting deal-closing platforms connecting project developers with private equity, multilateral development banks, and philanthropic capital.

Key pillars for this transformation include building and financing integrated regional energy systems, reforming risk assessment to lower the cost of capital for green infrastructure, scaling resilient food systems through climate-smart agribusiness incubators, and recognizing nature restoration as high-value economic infrastructure through community-led initiatives and high-integrity carbon markets. By presenting these as operational blueprints, Africa can offer a clear roadmap for climate action implementation.
