Femi Falana urges Nigerians to demand accountability from all government tiers amid rising revenue
Human rights lawyer and Senior Advocate of Nigeria, Femi Falana, has called on Nigerians to hold the Federal, state, and local governments accountable for increased revenue. Falana noted that despite the rise in government funds, there has not been a corresponding improvement in the living conditions of Nigerians. He urged citizens to question how these additional funds are being spent. Speaking on Channels Television鈥檚 Sunday Politics, Falana cited the example of a road leading to Afe Babalola University in Ekiti State, questioning why the local government, which received approximately N5.4 billion between January and May, had not fixed a road estimated to cost less than N500 million. He emphasized that Nigerians should demand accountability from each tier of government for its responsibilities, rather than solely relying on the Federal Government. Falana also raised concerns about the benefits of fuel subsidy removal, stating that citizens should not be continually asked to wait for economic reform gains while struggling. He further questioned the government's use of funds previously allocated for fuel importation, suggesting that the $10 billion per annum should have been saved but is largely being used for debt servicing. Falana concluded that since all levels of government are receiving more money, they should be subjected to greater scrutiny by the populace.
