Senyo Hosi criticizes Ghana's galamsey fight, citing continued environmental degradation
Economic policy analyst Senyo Hosi, convener of the OneGhana Movement, has strongly criticized Ghana's efforts against illegal mining, known as galamsey. Speaking on Joy News' Newsfile on August 22, 2026, Hosi stated that despite arrests and equipment seizures by the National Illegal Mining Operations Secretariat NAIMOS, water bodies, forest reserves, and food security continue to worsen. He argued that the effectiveness of interventions should be measured by their environmental impact, not just by the number of arrests or impounded equipment. Hosi noted that by June 2026, NAIMOS had arrested 207 people, but emphasized that such figures do not indicate success if environmental conditions are deteriorating. He suggested that former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo's first term showed a genuine effort against galamsey, which later weakened due to political considerations. Hosi urged policymakers to shift their focus from inputs and activities to actual policy outcomes, stating, "This nonsense must stop."
