Chetan Baboolall appointed leader of the opposition

At 46 years old, the lawyer becomes the 17th person to hold this constitutional position since independence. Baboolall, who was born and raised in Bel-Air, was called to the Bar of the Honourable Society of the Middle Temple in London in 2003 and admitted to the Bar of Mauritius in 2005. He has since practiced privately.

His political engagement began in 2010 when he joined the MMM, eventually becoming a member of its Political Bureau. After his first general election bid in 2019, he was elected to the National Assembly in 2024 for constituency No. 10, Montagne-Blanche–Grande-Rivière-Sud-Est. In April 2026, Baboolall left the MMM to join Paul Bérenger and Joanna Bérenger, forming the Fron Militan Progresis FMP and sitting as a distinct opposition group. As leader of the opposition, Baboolall intends to address issues such as the cost of living, education, and the supply of water and electricity.
