Carbonsate founder discusses terrestrial biomass storage and carbon credit market in Namibia

Carbonsate removes encroaching bush biomass and buries it underground to store carbon, similar to how coal was formed. This process prevents the biomass from decomposing or being burned, keeping carbon out of the atmosphere. The company recently announced a 50,000-tonne carbon removal agreement with Senken, a broker that sells carbon credits to companies.

Sperling explained that carbon credits allow companies to finance emission reductions or removals elsewhere. The projects benefit Namibian farmers by restoring land, increasing grassland, improving water retention, and enhancing biodiversity. Carbonsate has completed two projects between Otjiwarongo and Kalkveld, with plans to expand to other locations in Namibia.

The company is also seeking new partners and innovative solutions for biomass harvesting to scale operations effectively. Sperling highlighted that the carbon credits market offers an opportunity for countries with low emissions, like Namibia, to create jobs, generate financial value, and achieve environmental benefits through the export of carbon credits.
