Botswana's new tax laws: what they mean for Batswana
Botswana implemented significant tax reforms on July 1, 2026, introducing new tax administration, Value Added Tax VAT, and income tax legislation. These changes aim to modernize the tax framework, broaden the tax base, and enhance government revenue collection amidst fiscal pressures and declining diamond revenues. The reforms, while technical, are expected to impact households, businesses, investors, and pension fund members, with high-income earners facing increased taxes. For instance, top earners are now subject to a 27.5% tax rate. The country is also expanding its digital tax net.
