Vice President Shettima visits Borno, condoles Army over attack

Vice President Kashim Shettima visited Maiduguri, Borno State, to offer condolences to the Nigerian Army and the state government following a recent attack on military personnel in Benisheikh. The attack resulted in the deaths of several officers and soldiers, including Brigadier General Oseni Braimah. Speaking on behalf of President Bola Tinubu, Shettima stated that the fallen soldiers died in service to the nation, emphasizing that their sacrifice highlights the significant cost of peace and security. He assured continued support from the Federal Government, asserting that "criminals will have no hiding place under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu." The condolence visit occurred after a midnight assault on a military base in Benisheikh, where suspected Boko Haram and Islamic State West Africa Province fighters reportedly launched coordinated attacks on multiple military positions. However, the Headquarters of Operation Hadin Kai dismissed reports of 17 soldiers and the brigade commander being killed, with Lt.-Col. Sani Uba, Media Information Officer of the Northeast Joint Task Force, stating that only two officers and two soldiers died. He also clarified that the brigade commander's vehicle was only temporarily immobilized during combat, not a failure, and that official casualty figures remain those released by the Defence Headquarters.
