CISLAC condemns Borno–Yobe airstrike, calls for urgent investigation
The Civil Society Legislative Advocacy Centre/Transparency International in Nigeria has voiced strong concerns regarding a reported Nigerian Air Force airstrike that hit a civilian market along the Borno–Yobe boundary. The incident, which occurred during operations targeting insurgents, is feared to have resulted in numerous deaths and injuries. CISLAC/TI-Nigeria's Executive Director, Auwal Musa Rafsanjani, issued a statement on Sunday, extending condolences to the victims and demanding a swift, transparent, and independent investigation. The organization highlighted a troubling pattern of civilian casualties in counterterrorism operations, attributing it to systemic weaknesses such as weak intelligence verification, lack of precision targeting, and pressure for rapid results. CISLAC called for an independent probe and accountability measures, including the establishment of a civilian-led investigative panel comprising the National Human Rights Commission, Civil Society, and international observers. They also urged for public disclosure of findings, accountability for errors or negligence, and adequate compensation for victims.
