
Diphtheria outbreak in Kédougou, Senegal: 12 confirmed cases and multiple deaths reported
Twelve cases of diphtheria have been confirmed in the Saraya and Kédougou health districts in southeastern Senegal. Following the initial alert in late July, six new infections were confirmed on August 18 and 19, bringing the total to twelve cases. The first three positive cases included two in Saraya and one in Kédougou. According to Dr. Ababacar Mbaye, the incident manager for the Regional Epidemic Management Committee, all twelve patients are between 4 and 13 years old, with an equal distribution of boys and girls. Health investigations have identified 202 contact individuals. The situation is particularly concerning for young children, with several deaths reported in the region's health facilities, some involving children under five years old. One death was confirmed post-mortem. Health services are continuing investigations and epidemiological surveillance to control the spread of the disease.
