Aviation industry faces challenges in preserving flight recorder data for accident investigations

These 'black boxes' provide insights into the human and technical factors behind incidents, helping investigators understand why accidents occur and formulate safety recommendations. A significant vulnerability is that recorders can be overwritten before investigators secure them, especially if aircraft remain powered after an incident. This loss of critical data can hinder the ability to identify contributing factors and systemic problems, undermining aviation safety efforts.

The NSIB Director-General, Capt. Alex Badeh Jr., cited an incident involving a Bombardier Challenger 601 jet where the pilot allegedly overwrote the flight recorder data after a runway excursion. Badeh also noted that fear among crews of losing their jobs can lead to delayed reporting or unintentional compromise of evidence. To address this, the industry needs clear and mandatory preservation procedures, including prompt notification to authorities and immediate steps to secure recorder data.

Technological advancements like longer-duration CVRs and automated preservation mechanisms could also help. Regulators must establish accountability for operators who fail to preserve evidence, balancing enforcement with a "Just Culture" that encourages reporting without fear of dispropor
