Aminata Touré discusses fuel price increase in context of global economic tensions
Aminata Touré, former Head of Government, has addressed the recent readjustment of fuel prices, urging a broader perspective beyond immediate consumer impact. Speaking on RTS, she defended the government's decision by linking it to current global economic tensions. Touré emphasized that the price adjustment is connected to international developments, citing the war in Ukraine's effect on essential goods, and ongoing tensions in the oil market, particularly around the Strait of Hormuz, a critical area for global hydrocarbon supply. The former Prime Minister stated that authorities tried to minimize the impact on consumers, noting that the government had previously worked to keep prices down before the international situation made this unsustainable. While acknowledging the challenges faced by households and the difficulties for Senegalese citizens, Touré believes this situation should prompt a wider discussion on Senegal's economic and social future. She asserted that current difficulties should be an opportunity to reflect on mechanisms to strengthen the national economy's resilience to external shocks.
