Farmers to access tractors under new leasing initiative in Nigeria
Smallholder farmers in Benue, Nasarawa, Ogun, and Edo states will gain access to affordable tractors, irrigation systems, and other modern farming equipment through a new partnership between the Equipment Leasing Registration Authority ELRA and Heifer Nigeria. The two organizations signed a two-year Memorandum of Understanding, effective from August 15, 2026, to August 14, 2028, under Heifer Nigeria’s Naija Unlock Programme. This initiative aims to boost food production, strengthen agricultural value chains, and enhance Nigeria’s food security by expanding access to agricultural mechanization through flexible leasing and lease-to-own models. This will allow smallholder farmers, cooperatives, women, and young agripreneurs to acquire modern equipment without high upfront costs. Registrar and Chief Executive Officer of ELRA, Donald Wokoma, stated that this agreement is a major milestone in advancing agricultural financing and addressing barriers to increased food production. Country Director of Heifer Nigeria, Lekan Tobe, emphasized the commitment to empowering smallholder farmers through practical, market-driven solutions. The agreement includes joint development of affordable leasing models for various equipment, from tractors to cold-chain infrastructure. Beyond equipment financing, the partnership will also implement capacity-building programs in agribusiness management, financial literacy, and equipment operation for farmers and rural enterprises.
