
Reps group demands probe of Fadahunsi, Osun poll violence, deaths
The Save Democracy Group, a bipartisan platform of members of the House of Representatives, has called for a full investigation into the violence and deaths associated with the 2026 Osun State governorship election. The group emphasized that political competition should not lead to the loss of Nigerian lives. They also demanded an investigation into a viral video allegedly showing Senator Francis Fadahunsi making comments that were interpreted as encouraging supporters to kill members of the Accord Party in Ilesa. The lawmakers stated that all deaths from political violence must be investigated and those responsible brought to justice. They expressed concern over the reported scale of violence before and during the poll, noting that the Nigeria Police Force was investigating 30 suspected politically motivated killings. The group also cited civil society reports documenting 56 violent incidents and 14 fatalities. They questioned the effectiveness of the extensive security deployment in Osun State, arguing that it should translate into effective protection of lives and property. The Save Democracy Group urged the Inspector-General of Police, Department of State Services, National Human Rights Commission, and other relevant authorities to investigate Senator Fadahunsi's alleged statements and determine if any law was breached.
