Canada imposes retaliatory tariffs on US goods amid escalating trade dispute
Canada has announced retaliatory tariffs of up to 50 percent on approximately 700 American products, valued at about $20 billion annually, following the collapse of trade negotiations with the United States. These new duties, effective September 8, target a range of goods from steel and aluminum to household appliances and fish. Canada's government stated the measures are primarily to protect Canadian workers, manufacturers, and producers from the impact of new tariffs imposed by US President Donald Trump. The most significant measure doubles Canada's existing tariffs on American steel and aluminum to 50 percent, with other products facing 25 percent and 15 percent tariffs.
