ADC confident of defeating Tinubu in 2027 without coalition, says spokesperson
Bolaji Abdullahi, the African Democratic Congress ADC National Publicity Secretary, stated that the party does not require a coalition to defeat President Bola Tinubu in the 2027 presidential election. Speaking on Channels Television鈥檚 Politics Today, Abdullahi expressed confidence that ADC's presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, could win independently. While acknowledging that a broad-based coalition could simplify their task, he maintained it was not essential for victory. Abdullahi believes Atiku can defeat Tinubu single-handedly, expecting support from voters nationwide due to Nigerians' experiences under the current administration. He noted that the ADC anticipates many Nigerians will change their voting preferences. This stance follows an ambitious but ultimately incomplete opposition realignment in 2025, which saw several opposition figures, including Atiku, Peter Obi, and Nasir El-Rufai, initially adopt the ADC as a joint platform. However, internal disagreements led to fractures, with Obi and former Kano Governor Rabiu Kwankwaso later joining the Nigeria Democratic Congress. Abdullahi also mentioned that the ADC is open to continued discussions with other opposition parties, focusing on areas like election monitoring and protecting votes rather than solely on producing a single presidential candidate. He also challenged the government to a debate on the ADC's proposal to restore fuel subsidy, stating that Nigerians deserve to hear arguments on the issue.
